A Blast from the Past (2) ....

Every so often when sorting

through the many cardboard boxes in the studio,

I usually stumble upon photos

taken many years ago of my early works,

both of plein-air and studio works.

 

The piece above is a plein-air work.

 

I set-up at the back entrance of

the Mystic Seaport Museum.

Most of the painting was done on-site

with 2 or 3 visits after the initial start.

I took a few photos as reference

for the proper placement of the rigging

on both vessels so the piece could be

finished in the studio.

 

I remember the Antique Car Show

was happening at the time

during the 2 location visit.

It was fun hearing all the

old cars slowly puttering by

with happy laughing and encouraging cheers

coming from their freshly polished seats. 

 

I found the framestock somewhere,

during my many travels.

The stock was in rough shape,

but with a good hand-sanding and

a layer of gold leaf, it turned out nicely.

I love having fun

and

I enjoy watching

other people have fun too!

You know it's the height of summer fun 

when you see so much activity 

happening out on the water

and

you're not sure where you want to look first

because you might miss out on something!

OH! Look at that!

Jet-Skis whizzing by!

or

Powerboats moving swiftly!

or

Ferries going to and fro!

or

Sailboats cruising along!

or

Sunfish zig-zagging

in between it all!

And remembering to keep an alert eye 

for subtle details is important. 

As you can see the choices

can become a bit difficult.

Though, the ones moving fast usually 

garner the attention right away!

A string of events ...

A string of events has kept me away

from the easel in recent weeks.
though it has not dampened the
creative ideas from flowing nor
the desire to get back into the studio
to paint, paint, paint!

Event 1.
Some home improvement took center stage,

a long awaited plumbing project was finally tackled! 

Event 2.
Shortly after the project was taken care,

 came down with some cold/flu/virus 

which was like none other.
It had me out for a good solid 10 days
and is still kicking around
with some residual effects.

Event 3.
Between the many hours of sleep
and when awake somewhere in between
all the sneezing and coughing fits,
 managed to accomplish a few things of importance.

1. Applied for the Amercian Society of Marine Artists
Signature Membership: a prestigious honour
to any marine artist, if granted.

2. In the process of applying
for ASMA Signature Membership
required a rewrite of the Binoculars Statement.
A blessing in disguise because
all along I knew it needed something.
(see below for the final statement)

3. Managed to do some painting, thankfully!


Event 4.
Naturally after any
home improvement projects
and overall feeling better,

the home project tasking

continues with the finishing touches
among other things as well.


So, in the next couple of weeks
there will be more production from the studio!

Binoculars Series Statement (revisited) ...

I have always had an affinity for light, water, nature and atmospheric perspective, and the genre of plein-air painting has enabled me to combine this with an artistic direction that is both challenging and satisfying. The Binoculars series, first created in 2003, is a contemporary marine art series inspired by the desire to fuse both studio and plein-air works, celebrating all watercraft: from the hard-working tugboat to the leisurely sailing yacht, from massive tankers to little sunfish dinghies, and everything in between. The Binoculars' field of vision is limitless and continues to broaden my artistic boundaries, challenging me to explore new formats, new ways of handling paint and helping me keep a fresh and alert eye on the ever-changing vista of the Binoculars' field of vision.

Last month I had the honour of being featured in the

Grace Magazine February-March 2012 issue.

The following days of when it came out

were exciting to say the least.

First order of business was to collect

a good number of copies.

Then select a few close friends and family 

to be on the receiving end of getting their own copy,

and for the sake of posterity.

Lastly, send out a very thankful email

to Amy Barry, the journalist who so kindly

ask to write about me and my art. 

Even had one copy framed to grace the studio walls 

to keep as a reminder as to when times are hard and

things seem as bleak as a cold winter's night,

it is paramount to persevere because

I am an Artist,

art is what I do,

through thick and thin

my field of vision is

limitless!

Back on the easel ...

Once in awhile a painting that was deemed finished

will find it's way back to the studio

in need of a little more attention

Such is the case with Binoculars #167

which is all framed up, but back in the studio

and on the easel receiving the attention it needs. 

The lonely horizon called out for something.

Cheerful spinnaker sails

now race and dance

in earnest across it's horizon.

Not only are they racing each other,

but they are racing ahead of the bad weather

that chases at their sterns.

The production rate in the studio

this past week was rather slow,
much like pouring molasses,

the complete opposite

of what I was hoping for,

especially when the week started out

with stores of vigor and moxie.

Chiefly for two reasons

1. I had to deal with the shipment
of a rather large painting
with a small shipping budget,
that was destined for its new home in
St Croix of the Virgin Islands.

(which was a success thanks to a friend.)

and

2. I know that there are some 

key upcoming opportunities,

in the marine art community
that I simply cannot pass up.

So, I shifted my mind and energies
to the nearing deadlines by  

organising dates on the calendar,

the planning of new paintings,

and to my dismay, a total rewrite of

the Binoculars series statement.

And peppered in between
all of the strategizing,
brush marks found their
way onto pieces that have
been begging to be finished.

So, even though it may have
been slow work at the easel
my mind on the other hand
was quick at work
preparing
for things to come!

Focus and determination
can carry one far.

Out for a Sail ...

Nice warm winds, calm waters, and sunny,

the perfect summer day to be

'Out for a Sail'

Far out on the horizon,

sails slowly, sometimes quickly,

make their way along to the rhythm

of the warm sea breezes

carrying the sound of laughter

and crying seagulls,

over the waves gently

lapping at the shore.
