------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The weekend of July 6-9 2012
was absolutely magical and magnificent
for any maritime artist!

OpSail2012CT
was scheduled
to happen that weekend
in the city of New London, CT
and unbeknownst to me
at the time so was the
50th Annual Catboat Association Rendez-Vous
which was held in the celebrated
Seaport town of Mystic, CT.

That Friday I decided to my ride
bike down to Avery Point
hoping to see and gather a bunch of
pre-OpSail activities for future paintings.

All I can say is
my hopes became reality,
the day was simply perfect!

Full of glorious sunshine,
crying and laughing gulls,
warm soothing sea-breezes
and lots and lots and lots
of sailing and boating activity!

Oh My!!

It was almost too overwhelming
I simply couldn't wait to
get started on new works!

After the busy day of OpSail,
(which was misty and foggy)
my sister and I
ventured to Watch Hill, RI
for a nice lazy kick-back
day at the beach.

Yet, another perfect day!

Oh My, Oh My!!

One thing I've learned over the years
is that whenever my sister and I
go to the beach together
I don't just bring a towel and suntan lotion
I also bring my Binoculars and camera
because some momentous thing
always happens out on the water!

Like a Catboat with a wonderful
yellow spinnaker sail cruises on by.

Needless to say the weekend was
packed with one painting after another.

And more are still in the works!

Please, stay tuned for more
what's new from the studio!

Cheers, ~ Polly ~

RESERVED!
for the up-coming show
at the Cate Charles Gallery.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I love having fun
and
I enjoy watching
other people have fun too!

You know it's the height of summer fun
when you see so much activity
happening out on the water
and
you're not sure where you want to look first
because you might miss out on something!

OH! Look at that!

Jet-Skis whizzing by!
or
Powerboats moving swiftly!
or
Ferries going to and fro!
or
Sailboats cruising along!
or
Sunfish zig-zagging
in between it all!

And remembering to keep an alert eye
for subtle details is important.

As you can see the choices
can become a bit difficult.

Though, the ones moving fast usually
garner the attention right away!

'Summer Fun'!

Before paintings leave the studio for the gallery
they begin the last process of documenting and presentation.

Paintings are signed, dated, titled, dry, varnished, and
recieve a thorough inspection before they head off to the woodshop
for framing where they'll wait for their custom fit to be made.

Hand selected poplar is milled into a contemporary
floating framestock of my design, in the studio's woodshop.

The frames undergo the same treatment as the paintings.

They are fitted, mitered, joined, glued, sanded, waxed,
and recieve a final seal of approval before paintings are set
into their frames where they will be showcased to the World!

Each painting is then photographed multiple times
for the closest possible match to the actual piece.

The images are then photoshopped for id-ing and
a little extra fine tuning on the matching if needed.

The last and final step, delivery to the Gallery.

For all the World to see.

Out for a Sail ...

Binoculars #137 - Detail.

.....

Nice warm winds, calm waters, and sunny,
the perfect summer day to be
'Out for a Sail'

Far out on the horizon,
sails slowly, sometimes quickly,
make their way along to the rhythm
of the warm sea breezes
carrying the sound of laughter
and crying seagulls,
over the waves gently
lapping at the shore.

..........

Let me take you back to
this past summer - mid August.

I was heading back to the studio
after having just delivered a number of
new pieces to the Cate Charles Gallery
when I decided to a pay visit to a
favourite Binocular location of mine.
Avery Point, Groton CT.

Avery Point always has something good to offer.

Unbeknownst to me
 awaited a rather sweet surprise.

There
just off shore,
anchored
on the New London side
was the 'Eagle'
the US Coast Guard Cutter.

Detail: Binoculars #163 - View from Avery Point.

Seeing her impressive silhouette
anchored there in the
bright sparkling water
being greeted with a fervour of
on-lookers, hellos, cheers,
and welcoming's home
filled my Spirit up with much
delight, excitement
and inspiration.

Apparently, she had just returned
from a 3 month European voyage.

A View from Avery Point.

Binoculars #132. View from Avery Point (Day Sailor).
8" x 48". oil on mdo board. 2010. Copyright.
On display at the Sylvan Gallery

Avery Point, is located at the mouth of the Thames River on the eastern side of Groton CT (which also home to the UConn Avery Point campus), has been a great source of inspiration for my 'Binoculars' series for many years. The view from Avery Point is spectacular and offers loads of inspirational sources; Long Island and Fisher's Island Sound(s), the eastern end of Long Island, Fisher's Island, five lighthouses; New London Harbor Lighthouse, New London Ledge LightLittle Gull Island LighthouseRace Rock Lighthouse (my personal favourite) and last, but not least North Dumpling Lighthouse, all of which can be seen from varying points along Avery Point's coastline, and many other little islands and reefs peppered along the Sound(s).

What makes Avery Point ideal for the 'Binoculars' series, is not only the wonderful backdrop of the Sounds, islands and lighthouses, but the great diversity of vessels which can be seen passing through or in and around the mouth of the Thames River; everything from tankers to tug n' tows, from cruise ships to tall ships, from New London ferries to Block Island ferries, from wooden schooners to classic yachts, from trawlers to power-boats, from skipjacks to sunfish and from jet-skies to 'yakers' aka kayakers ... all of which makes for challenging and great compositional work.

I would be remiss, if I did not mention that the wildlife at Avery Point also offers terrific inspiration; the seagulls, egrets, osprey and cormorants lend themselves for that added compositional interest and element of fun!!
