A warm front has passed through the New England region,
melting all the lovely snow that was here just a few short days ago
and bringing with it lots of dense fog and super winds!
(Internet connection was just restored)

The fog raced along the blue sky allowing for pockets
of gorgeous sunshine to stream through!

Naturally, I couldn't contain my excitement and grabbed
the paints and headed out into the yard.

Please stay tuned for more, 'what's new from the studio!'

Plein-air Efforts of the Day ...

What initially caught my eye in this view
was the streak of sunlight on the wintry grass
and where the light fell on the tree.

It was nearing sunset
so I knew I had to work quickly.

The light moved gracefully across
the quiet scene.
Picking out tips of grasses
and shadows falling into undulations.
The branches played hide and seek
in the light and shadows.

It all looked
so beautiful and magical,
that at one point
is was hard to decide
which streak of light
or
which deep shadow
to paint.

So, with the remaining
last light of the day,
and
with a feeling of contentment
I broke down the easel
and retired for the evening.

Please, stay tuned for more

Plein-air Efforts of the Day ...

Yesterday's plein-air efforts that is!

Plein-air / Painted Turtle Pond - Hunts Brook.
10" x 10". Oil on mdo board. 2013. Copyright.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday was a touch warmer
for a little plein-air venturing!!

A few miles from the studio
there is a lovely brook called
Hunts Brook.

In the warmer months
I often ride my bike through
the back roads and one road I'm
particularly fond is, Unger Road.

Unger Road slices through
Hunts Brook
making it widen
and creating a marshy type area,
ideal for Painted Turtles,
though not the road.

(Over the years of riding my bike,
a few turtle rescues have been made.)

The view that called out.

is in the background of the photo,
you can just make out the greenhouse roof.

And here is the easel
with my work in progress attempts.

You can't quite tell from the photo,
but it was slightly sunny
and the Sun was gracious enough
to peak out from behind
its silver curtain of clouds
from time to time.

Please stay tuned for more
what's new from the studio!

'Old Man Winter'
is certainly here in
New England
and his grip is
a firm and rather icy one!

My plein-air efforts over
the past few days have been terribly futile
for a number of combined reasons.

So, this morning
while deciding to do either
studio or plein-air work
I looked at my dud attempts
with mild disappointment.

I gazed out one of the studio windows,
and those lovely blue shadows
were calling out loud and clear!

Instead of taking the time to
suit-up and brave
 the bone-chilling air
I decided this time around
to paint those lovely blue shadows
from the comforts of the warm studio!!

Please stay tuned for more

Blast from the Past ... On the Dark Side!

Plein-air / Uncasville Night Scene #2 - From the Studio Window.
12" x 14 3/4". Oil on mdo board. 2005. Copyright.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last night,
after recounting some
memorable painting stories
with my partner,
I found myself in our woodshop
where all of the orphan paintings
of mine are stored,
I came across
a short lived plein-air series
which was started back in 2005 of
'Uncasville Night Scenes'.

It was a series I enjoyed very much!

And now in retrospect,
I know why the series
faded away into the night.

It has to do with the process
I was using at the time.
I wanted so much
for the darks to be dark
I applied a layer of retouch varnish
(perhaps a little too heavily)
between each layer of paint
which ended up making
the darks dark,
but also it made the piece
look like a sheet of glass.

My attempts at dulling
the glossy were futile
and only had the reverse effect.

The glossy surface was too much
to work with on so many levels.
I simply gave up on the series.

Now that my painting process is different.
I think it is time to revisit this series!

Please stay tuned for more

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The weekend of July 6-9 2012
was absolutely magical and magnificent
for any maritime artist!

OpSail2012CT
was scheduled
to happen that weekend
in the city of New London, CT
and unbeknownst to me
at the time so was the
50th Annual Catboat Association Rendez-Vous
which was held in the celebrated
Seaport town of Mystic, CT.

That Friday I decided to my ride
bike down to Avery Point
hoping to see and gather a bunch of
pre-OpSail activities for future paintings.

All I can say is
my hopes became reality,
the day was simply perfect!

Full of glorious sunshine,
crying and laughing gulls,
warm soothing sea-breezes
and lots and lots and lots
of sailing and boating activity!

Oh My!!

It was almost too overwhelming
I simply couldn't wait to
get started on new works!

After the busy day of OpSail,
(which was misty and foggy)
my sister and I
ventured to Watch Hill, RI
for a nice lazy kick-back
day at the beach.

Yet, another perfect day!

Oh My, Oh My!!

One thing I've learned over the years
is that whenever my sister and I
go to the beach together
I don't just bring a towel and suntan lotion
I also bring my Binoculars and camera
because some momentous thing
always happens out on the water!

Like a Catboat with a wonderful
yellow spinnaker sail cruises on by.

Needless to say the weekend was
packed with one painting after another.

And more are still in the works!

Please, stay tuned for more
what's new from the studio!

Put on the ski-suit,
the winter jacket,
the heavy gloves
 and set-up the paints!

Since, it was rather cold outside,
after a while I decided to finish the piece
in the comforts of the warm studio.

Please, stay tuned for more
plein-air painting adventures
and
what's new from the studio!
